IG1 Assignment

The purpose of IG1 was to develop my skills of analysing short films, ideas generation, researching script writing and commissioning techniques, mending an incorrect script, writing my own first draft, second draft and final draft of my own or another member of my group's script, writing a proposal and treatment for my own short film and to be able to perform a pitch in front of an audience.

IG1 Task 3 - Initial Ideas Generation - Mindmap

IG1 Task 3 - Short Film Moodboard

The film is about a group of lads going making their way to a football stadium to watch their team play in the cup final.

Props included are the ticket, scarf and football. These are all relevant to the match.

There is also a image of a football related fight, as the film will feature a fight scene with the opposition fans.

I have also included an alarm clock, as one of the group wakes up late and an elderly man in a mobility scooter as the final scene features a 'herd' of pensioners on scooters blocking the path.

All of the images on this moodboard play a part in the film which is why they are important and included.

I CHANGED MY IDEA FOR MY SHORT FILM SO ANY FURTHER WORK WILL BE ABOUT THAT

IG1 Task 4 - Short Film Treatment

SHORT FILM TREATMENT
‘Hello, Dad’
After the death of his mother, Tommy is forced to live with his estranged father.
At first, Tommy doesn’t like the idea of living with an alcoholic who he hasn’t seen in 5 years. He walks into his new home to find his Dad slumped on the couch asleep with several bottles of beer around him. He tries in vain to wake him up before deciding to take his belongings and sleep rough under a bridge. He would rather be homeless than live with this layabout who doesn’t care about life.
After a week, Tommy’s social worker comes round to see how he is getting on. When his Dad answers the door though, he has no idea that his son has even been round – never mind planned to move in. After a war of words with the social worker, he is forced to go out onto the streets and find his son.
When he eventually finds Tommy, he tries to persuade him to come back to his as he ‘has changed’ and hasn’t touched alcohol in 6 months. Tommy is haven’t none of it but doesn’t mention the fact that he had seen his Dad in a drunken state only a week before and tells him to leave him alone.
His Dad concedes that it is best that he doesn’t live with him as he is not in the right frame of mind. When he is walking home, he is carrying a plastic bag – you are led to believe that this bag is for Tommy but he is actually carrying booze – hidden by a sleeping bag. He sits on a park bench and gets drunk.
After Tommy realises that he can’t sleep rough anymore – he proceeds to walk to his Dad’s house. On the way though, he notices him on the bench and instead of shouting at him, he sits him up and drags him home.
The next day, when his Dad is now sober, he wonders where Tommy has gone. He once again goes looking for him before giving up and going in the local supermarket to buy alcohol.  While scanning the aisles, he notices Tommy buying groceries and quickly puts the beer back before joining his son with the shopping. He is very proud of himself for not buying the beer but also proud of his son and starts letting the world know that Tommy is his boy. They go home and things are finally looking like they are getting better.
After a couple of weeks of living together and re-building their broken relationship, Tommy returns from school to let his Dad know that he has won an award and the presentation evening is in a week’s time. His Dad is delighted and promises that he will attend.
Everything appears well, Tommy is enjoying life again and his Dad is turning his life around. However, after a chance meeting with his mother, he secretly hits the booze again when he is reminded that his ex-wife, the love of his life, is dead.
The day arrives for Tommy to collect his award. His Dad is in the shower so he leaves a note on the fridge to remind him that he must be at his school for 7pm and leaves for his friend’s house.
Tommy’s Dad comes downstairs, and after noticing that he is home alone, he brings out his stashed booze and begins to get drunk. Tommy is left devastated and embarrassed when his Dad doesn’t show up before he gets angry and runs home to scold his Dad.
When he gets home, he realises that his Dad is asleep with the note he left earlier placed beside him. He shouts at his Dad to wake him up, and begins punching him as he lies on the couch. He tells him he never wants to see him again, packs his bags and goes to live with his friend.
We fast forward six months. Tommy still hasn’t seen his Dad even though he only lives 20 minutes away. Tommy is due to be leaving school and is waiting eagerly to attend his end of year celebration.
We finally see Tommy’s Dad again and it looks like he is doing well. He has a new job and hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol since he last saw his son. He learns of Tommy’s school do and decides he would like to show up and surprise his son with his new, booze-free lifestyle. He hopes that they can reconcile, Tommy will move back and everything will be okay.
The night of the celebration arrives. Tommy is already there with his friends having a good time, while his Dad is at home putting on his best clothes. He is clearly excited at seeing his boy again so decides to throw away his stash once and for all as he believes he won’t ever need it again. He takes a long look into the mirror, smiles at himself and then leaves.
Tommy is in the swing of his party before looking out of the window and see’s a car pulling up in the car park. He runs outside as he thinks that the car is his Dad’s. However, it is just similar and it disappointed when his friend and his Mum walk out from the car. As he goes back inside, he hears someone shout his name. He turns round and is overwhelmed that his Dad has turned up, but quickly hides it with an angry face and heads back inside. His Dad is gutted by this so decides to jog up the road to speak with his son.
Tommy is looking out of the window and see’s his Dad running up. He finally decides that he is actually delighted that he is here and so runs outside. He and his Dad share a quick smile and he invites him in. His Dad just has to cross the road first. In his joy, he doesn’t look where he is going and is abruptly knocked down by an oncoming car.
Tommy runs over to him, and holds his dying father in his arms. They both begin to cry when his Dad explains that he is off the drink and wants to start again with his son. He dies in Tommy’s arms after giving him a letter with the words ‘To Tommy” written on the front.
Weeks later, Tommy is at the funeral and chooses to open the letter his Dad gave to him. He begins to cry with happiness and any ill feeling towards him has gone...
